Family Impact Star (Addictions)

For people affected by the addictive behaviour of someone close to them

Who is the Family Impact Star for?

The Family Impact Star has been developed for people affected by the addictive behaviour of someone close to them such as a family member, partner, adult child or close friend. The main focus of the Star is on supporting people impacted by someone’s relationship with alcohol, drugs or gambling, but it may also be suitable for other addictions. This Star is not suitable for use with children or in relation to food addictions.

The Family Impact Star helps people and the services supporting them identify progress towards key outcomes areas like understanding addiction, being safe and in control and managing daily life, and give clarity on where to focus next.

The Family Impact Star (Addictions) is one of a suite of Stars for the family. Family Star (Relationships) is a variant focused on protecting children from conflict between parents. Family Star and Family Star Plus are for parents to help support children to thrive. Family Star (Early Years) has been developed for parents of young children.

You may also want to consider My Star which can be used to capture the voice of the child, their needs and perspective.

Using the Outcomes Star approach

The Family Impact Star is designed to be used as part of the Outcomes Star approach. That’s why we provide essential training and ongoing support to all licenced practitioners, so you can embed the Outcomes Star approach in your practice.

How does the Family Impact Star work?

The Family Impact Star covers seven outcome areas that support people impacted by the addictive behaviour of someone close to them to make changes, and assesses their progress towards each outcome area following a five-stage Journey of Change.

You and the people you support will fill out the Star together, and use it to better identify where their strengths lie and where they might need more help, and to make plans for moving forward along the journey.

Always rooted in expertise and experience

The Family Impact Star was developed in collaboration with Relationships Australia Queensland and an expert working group made up of managers and practitioners from organisations supporting people affected by others’ addictive behaviour. We also worked with people who have lived experience of supporting someone with a gambling addiction.
