Young Person’s Star

For young people moving to independent living

Who is the Young Person’s Star for?

The Young Person’s Star was developed to support young people aged 16-25 who are moving to independent living. It is suitable for care leavers, those leaving young offenders institutions and other young people experiencing homelessness or transition.

The Star helps young people and the services supporting them to move into independent accommodation and identify progress towards key outcomes like accommodation, work and learning, and people and support, and give clarity on where to focus next.

The Young Person’s Star is primarily for use with young people aged 16-25. If you work with adults who are older than this, the Home Star may be more suitable.

The Home Star has been developed for people who have difficulties with housing or have other complex needs and may be seeking support with finding and keeping a home, improving relationships or learning new skills for dealing with problems.

Using the Outcomes Star approach

The Young Person's Star is designed to be used as part of the Outcomes Star approach. That’s why we provide essential training and ongoing support to all licenced practitioners, so you can embed the Outcomes Star approach in your practice.

How does the Young Person’s Star work?

The Young Person’s Star covers eight key outcomes areas that help support young people move toward independent living, and assesses their progress towards each following a five-stage Journey of Change.

You and the people you support will fill out the Star together, and use it to better identify where their strengths lie and where they might need more help, and to make plans for moving forward along the journey.

Always rooted in expertise and experience

The Young Person’s Star was initiated by 1625 Independent People in Bristol and piloted for over a year within their services and by Coram in London. Newham Borough Council collaborated in the final stage of the development to enable us to publish the finished product. Further testing was carried out by the Shelter Trust in Jersey.
