Who is the Work Star for?
The Work Star has been developed for adults who are out of work or returning to the workplace and accessing work and learning services. The Work Star supports people who want support to return to work after a gap or to find a job for the first time.
The Work Star helps people and the services supporting them identify progress towards key outcomes like job skills and experience, aspiration and motivation and job-search skills, and give clarity on where to focus next.
- Can people facing significant barriers to work use the Work Star?
If your service is working with people facing significant barriers to work, you may want to consider the Pathway Star. This Star is for people who need considerable support to help them move towards work. This includes people currently facing significant barriers to work, such as health or housing problems, substance misuse, crime, domestic abuse, or household finances.
Using the Outcomes Star approach
The Work Star is designed to be used as part of the Outcomes Star approach. That’s why we provide essential training and ongoing support to all licenced practitioners, so you can embed the Outcomes Star approach in your practice.
How does the Work Star work?
The Work Star covers seven key outcome areas that help adults accessing work or learning services to build the skills and confidence they need, and assesses their progress towards each following a five-stage Journey of Change.
You and the people you support will fill out the Star together, and use it to better identify where their strengths lie and where they might need more help, and to make plans for moving forward along the journey.

Always rooted in expertise and experience
The current edition of the Work Star is the 3rd Edition. The original Work Star was developed in collaboration with service providers and commissioners from Camden, Islington and Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council, with the development funded through the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). The 3rd Edition of the Star was published in 2017 with input from the Department of Work and Pensions (Essex Social Justice Team), Prospects, Hounslow Council and The LightBulb.
