Licensed Trainer training is our ‘train-the-trainer’ offer. A Licensed Trainer is someone who has been trained and licensed to deliver our Outcomes Star training programme within their own organisation. As Introduction training is a mandatory requirement for anyone completing Stars, this route makes training more efficient, personalised, and delivered in-house.

The Benefits of Becoming a Licensed Trainer (LT) #

The Licensed Trainer (LT) route provides flexibility as you roll out the Star and promotes consistent internal messaging, helping to ensure it is received positively when delivered by a member of your own team.

Organisations choose the Licensed Trainer route for a number of reasons. For organisations with a large number of staff to train, or with high staff or volunteer turnover, this route can make more financial sense than purchasing individual training sessions from us.

In addition, Licensed Trainers can give you greater flexibility in your approach to Star training. For example, although there is a standard programme, it can be broken down into bite-sized modules that work for your organisation, either to complement other training and development activities or to give people the chance to try completing one or two Stars between training sessions.

Another key benefit of the Licensed Trainer option is the creation of a legacy of skills and expertise around the Star within your organisation. This helps to build competency over time, demonstrate a commitment to quality to funders and other stakeholders, champion good practice, and support the integration of the Star into the ongoing development of your services and support.

Licensed Trainers are licensed to deliver Star training within their employing organisation only, but please talk to us if you are part of a contract or consortium.

How to Become a Licensed Trainer & Costs #

If you are interested in becoming a Licensed Trainer, please contact your Implementation Specialist here at Outcomes Star.

To become a Licensed Trainer, applicants must complete an application form, attend the two-day train-the-trainer programme, and hold an active annual LT licence.

The cost in Year 1 is £2,500. This includes the train-the-trainer programme, comprehensive training materials (including the Training Manual), and ongoing support from Outcomes Star.

Subsequent annual renewals cost £1,250 and include ongoing support and access to a CPD programme with other Licensed Trainers.

Star licences for individual staff members to use the Star are not included. Your organisation will need to arrange licences for these staff members separately. The Support Team will activate these licences after each course is delivered.

Who Can Be a Licensed Trainer #

Experience: Although it is beneficial, Licensed Trainers (LTs) do not need to have a formal training qualification. However, they do need to be competent in delivering training. The two-day train-the-trainer course will provide individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to deliver Star training sessions, but it is not designed to equip people to become trainers with no prior experience. Ideally, an LT will be a skilled trainer with experience of direct work with the client group your service supports and, where possible, some previous experience of using the Star.

Capacity: LTs must have sufficient time to deliver training on a regular basis in order to maintain a high level of skill and competence. They must also have the support of their managers to allow them the time needed to train.

Recommended Number of Licensed Trainers #

There is no straightforward answer to this, and it is best determined through discussion with your contact at Outcomes Star. Factors to consider include how many staff members need to be trained, the timeframe over which training needs to take place, and the impact of staff turnover and new starters.

Our experience suggests that one Licensed Trainer can train between 12 and 25 people per month.

Overview of the Licensed Trainer ‘Train-the-Trainer’ Course #

Prior to the training, participants will be provided with all the essential information about what the course will involve, including the core competency framework for Licensed Trainers (LTs).

Below is a brief overview of the two-day course:

  • Training methods: observing an existing trainer, reflective learning, questions and discussion, and observed practice.
  • Day 1: breaking down the core Star training programme through observation and learning from an experienced trainer.
  • Between Day 1 and Day 2: preparing to deliver one allocated session from the core Star training programme.
  • Day 2: delivering the allocated session to the group, assessed by Outcomes Star against the core competency framework.

Full details of the Licensed Trainer route can be found here.
